In May 1845, Sir John Franklin left the Thames in command of two Royal Navy ships—HMS Erebus and HMS Terror—to seek a navigable sea route across the top of the Americas. Having searched for the Northwest Passage for nearly three decades, the Admiralty was optimistic. Franklin’s ships featured canned provisions, steam locomotives, and screw propellers. He told a passing whaling captain he could make his provisions “spin out seven years” by supplementing his stores with game. One hundred and twenty-nine men sailed north across Baffin Bay, bound for Lancaster Sound. Three years later, they had not returned. HMS Enterprise, commanded by Captain Sir James Clark Ross, and HMS Investigator, under Captain Edward Bird, left England in 1848 to search for Franklin. Stopped by the ice that winter at Port Leopold, sledge teams did not leave the ships to search for Franklin until the spring of 1849. Four years had passed since Franklin’s expedition was last seen.
