The chapters in this volume address different aspects of work that involves open data relating to the ancient and Byzantine worlds, from scholarship using accessible open access resources, to the development of methods, schemas and standards for the production and sharing of structured data with other researchers. We showcase this fundamental, infrastructural element of the digital turn in the humanities because it is undeniably revolutionising the study of the historical world in both quantitative and qualitative ways. The range of work and scope of methodological focus brought to the table by our contributors allows us to consider a broad spectrum of research influences and impacts of the use and sharing of open access, source, licences, standards and scholarship. In this introduction we will begin with a brief discussion of digital scholarship in classics and Byzantine studies, tracing an unbroken thread from traditional academic and disciplinary standards to the ideals and impacts of open data. We then rehearse some of the key ways in which open scholarship and open data have been defined and prescribed in scholarly and cultural heritage discourse. Finally, we draw the web of links between approaches, methods and projects that appear within and among the chapters, more clearly to sketch the coherent themes across the volume as a whole.
