Artificial intelligence and sustainability are merging into one of our most consequential crossings on the road ahead. Educators and researchers are currently facing great environmental challenges alongside the revolutionary advances in intelligent systems. How can we leverage the AI tools to push sustainability—without dragging ourselves down with its own ecological footprint? What is the way forward to not only teaching learners to use AI tools but also think critically about their place in constructing a more sustainable world? This book, Artificial Intelligence in Sustainability Teaching and Research, stems from the conviction that these questions require prompt, close attention. The book is intended to gather the opinions and perspectives of a community of academics, educators and practitioners across various geographical regions, who are currently making significant strides in shaping new ways of thinking at the intersection of AI literacy and sustainability education. Their collectively oriented work reveals the revolutionary possibilities and deep-seated responsibilities of integrating AI into sustainability fields. We organised the book into four interlocking parts, each tackling a key aspect of this emerging field.
