Unmanned aircraft systems have developed from relatively simple remotely controlled machines into sophisticated platforms that combine aeronautical engineering, embedded computing, wireless communications, navigation technology, and automated decisionmaking. Their growing capabilities have expanded their use across agriculture, infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, emergency response, industrial logistics, scientific research, and public safety. As these applications have matured, the security requirements surrounding unmanned aircraft have become more complex. A modern drone is not simply an aircraft without a pilot onboard. It is a coordinated collection of hardware, software, communication links, data services, and human-operated systems whose interactions determine how safely and reliably the aircraft performs its assigned tasks. Early remotely controlled aircraft relied heavily on direct operator input. The pilot issued commands through a radio transmitter, and onboard electronics translated those commands into motor movements or control-surface adjustments. Although these systems still depended on electrical components and communication signals, their operational logic was comparatively limited. The aircraft generally performed only the functions necessary to respond to the operator, maintain basic stability, and execute relatively simple maneuvers. Security considerations therefore centered primarily on the integrity of the control link, the reliability of the onboard electronics, and the possibility of unauthorized interference. The introduction of increasingly capable flight controllers changed this arrangement. Microprocessors became powerful enough to execute sophisticated control algorithms, interpret multiple sensor inputs, and maintain stable flight without continuous manual correction. Inertial measurement units supplied information about acceleration and angular velocity, while barometers, magnetometers, and satellite-navigation receivers provided additional data about altitude, orientation, and position. The flight controller combined these inputs to estimate the aircraft’s state and calculate the adjustments needed to follow the pilot’s commands or an autonomous mission. This transition introduced an important distinction between controlling an aircraft and supervising an aircraft. In a manually controlled system, the operator may provide frequent corrections throughout a flight. In an autonomous system, the operator can instead define a mission, establish operating limits, and allow onboard software to manage many intermediate actions. The resulting reduction in direct human intervention improves operational efficiency, but it also increases dependence on software correctness, sensor reliability, configuration integrity, and carefully designed failure-handling procedures.
