Two industries are converging at a pace neither of them is fully ready for. On one side, agentic AI has crossed from research curiosity into operational deployment with extraordinary speed. The systems described in this book – autonomous reasoning agents that plan, invoke tools, retain memory across sessions, and execute multi-step workflows on real infrastructure – were academic publications in early 2024. By late 2025, they were running in production. By the time this book reaches print, they will be running in your production. On the other side, cybersecurity is a discipline whose practitioners have spent 30 years internalizing one principle: do not give untrusted input the authority to act. And now we are being asked to deploy systems whose foundational behavior is to interpret untrusted input as instruction. This book is about the operational discipline that makes that deployment defensible – an introduction to agentic AI for security practitioners and, at the same time, an introduction to security thinking for AI engineers. The gap between those two communities is now the most important gap in the field, and it must be closed by readers willing to work both sides. I wrote this book because I could not find it on my own shelf. Bringing agentic AI into live security operations was never about a single integration or one clever server; it was about applying the intelligence these agents make possible across the many domains a real enterprise runs – network, security, cloud, and identity – so an operator and the agent beside them could share one context instead of a dozen disconnected consoles. That shared context is what turns discrete, distributed data into intelligence – the idea behind my Model Context Protocol work and the pattern formalized in my defensive technical disclosure. I went looking for a single volume that would carry me from protocol to production across those domains, and what existed was excellent in pieces and incomplete as a whole: academic papers written for researchers, vendor material written for buyers, and practitioner blog posts that were sharp but scattered. This is the book I wished had been waiting for me – written for the working engineer who has been handed an agent and told to make it safe.
