As the sound of shakuhachi the shakuhachi filled the hall, a spotlight fell onto the pitch-black stage, illuminating a lone figure. He was dressed in white, save the red sash that was tied in a cross over his shoulders and under his arms. His long hair was gathered into a ponytail that reached halfway down his back. He stretched one arm out to the side, and for a moment, his wrist disappeared into the inky darkness beyond the light. When he brought his arm back, the audience caught its breath at the sight of what he held: a sword—a Japanese katana over a meter long. He gave it a swing through the air and its sharp, polished edge glimmered in the light. He lowered the tip of the katana and at that signal, the light expanded to fill the stage. Smiles spread through the audience, especially from the men, at the sight of three blondes in glamorous, revealing dresses. This was Las Vegas, after all. The man quickly raised the sword, and three figures dressed entirely in black appeared from the sides of the stage: ninjas, their hooded faces hidden behind masks. Each ninja carried a large rolled mat under one arm—classic tatami floor mats, though it was unclear how many people in the largely American audience would be familiar with the term. The ninjas approached the women and slowly unrolled the mats, wrapping them around the women. The women acted surprised and tried to resist, but the ninjas rolled them up tightly into three bundles. While they did this, the man in white walked in a circle around them, brandishing his sword. The sound of the shakuhachi grew louder and more intense. Soon, the three women were completely wrapped, with no part of their bodies visible. They were still standing, and you could tell from the way the mats moved that they were still inside, wriggling weakly. Then, the ninjas took out ropes and used them to bind the mats. At last, the wriggling stopped. Where the women had been, now three tatami pillars stood in their place.
