Colonialism still struggled to hold fast, and the identity of the postcolonial Arab world seemed to be under construction. Utopian visions of an Arab Palestinian state, free of the British Mandate, mingled with equally aspirational plans for an independent Israeli state, which in turn met the evolving Cold War and imperial desires of Great Britain and the Soviet Union to build spheres of in.uence—all happening alongside the development of new technologies that brought the people of the world into closer contact than ever before. .e radio carried all of this history, confusion, anger, anticipation, and hope. .is period was marked by the simultaneous mobilization of older propaganda practices mixed with experimentation and new initiatives meant to capture a growing, modern, radio audience. It was here, in these years, that the rhetorical groundwork for the modern Middle Eastern audioscape was shaped and contested.
