The man peering around the corner and down the hallway was, in a word, a slob. Anyone who knew him had no doubt. His suit should have seen the inside of a dry cleaner weeks ago. Middle-aged, balding, he still had the bad skin of a teenager. Not because of hormones, but because he was too lazy to wash regularly. His diet consisted of cheap garbage food. His tie was a kaleidoscope of stains from various fast-food meals he’d inhaled over the last six months. It coordinated with his shirt due to the shared colors of the yellow mustard stains from yesterday’s lunch, the faded terra-cotta of spaghetti sauce from last night’s dinner, and the occasional gray of grease stains that never completely washed out. His normal breakfast at the Athens Diner—sausage gravy and biscuits—had left a path of sauce dribbles trailing across the shirt and tie. Overall, he presented a disgusting picture. His eating habits were something he needed to address, since he’d had a heart attack over the Christmas holiday and was only forty years old. He didn’t care, though, because he felt he was in control of his corner of the world. In his mind, this was his town, and Manatee Bay Elementary was his school. He’d been the principal for almost three years, and all the teachers and staff had quickly learned about his vindictive nature.
