In this genre-defining book, Robin Silbergleid, at turns erudite and tender, makes a compelling case for turning our intersectional feminist attention to “queer mother memoirs”: contemporary texts written by queer-identified women, trans folx, and non-binary individuals about their experiences of conception, pregnancy, infertility, and mothering. By amassing and studying this archive, Silbergleid articulates the myriad ways in which these stories, alongside her own, transgress the fundamentals of narrative and heteropatriarchy that together comprise the “dominant heteronarrative paradigm” constraining the intelligibility of so many lives/narratives of queer familial creation (9). Through careful readings of these memoirs alongside narrative and queer/feminist theory, Silbergleid makes evident the integral ways in which queer mother memoir forges unexpected fellowship and division: the shared need, for instance, between the cis-hetero infertile woman and single lesbian arriving at the infertility clinic, or the uncomfortable tensions gender identity and embodied desire experienced by both a trans man choosing to gestate a child and a butch lesbian performing straight femininity to potentially conceive with a one-night stand. By theorizing these and other stories of queer mothering, Silbergleid demonstrates how attentive engagement with queer family building exposes the flimsy fiction of the standard hetero-reproductive story for the house of cards it is. But she also, more radically, shores up for readers a menu of possibilities, of pathways—in Silbergleid’s terms, “experiments”—that have both paved the way for her own queer motherhood journey and will, no doubt, beckon more of us along that path with her. Generous and whip-smart, witty and vulnerable, cerebral and embodied—even, at times, bloodied—Queer Mother Memoir testifies to the strength, resilience, and power of imagining one’s life differently, then realizing it. If Judith Butler, in Undoing Gender, is correct that “possibility is not a luxury; it is as crucial as bread,” the ideas as seeds that this book sows—beautiful, necessary—are nourishment indeed.
