Dynamics 365 Business Central is at the center of this change, with AI now built into the product and open to developers who want to extend it. At the heart of this evolution are large language models (LLMs) and AI agents. LLMs can interpret and generate natural language, while agents use them to plan and carry out tasks, often with the help of tools and business data. For Business Central, this opens up new ways to automate routine processes, support users, and connect the ERP with the wider AI ecosystem. Business Central is a strong platform for AI solutions for the following reasons: It includes embedded Copilot features and standard agents that you can use right away. It can be extended with AL and the AI Development Toolkit to build custom copilots and agents. It can be integrated with Copilot Studio, Azure, and .NET through APIs and the Model Context Protocol (MCP). In this book, we will first introduce the fundamental concepts of LLMs and AI agents. Then we will build agents with Copilot Studio, create custom copilots in AL, and learn how to test AI solutions so they remain reliable across model updates. We will also explore the AI features and standard agents already available in Business Central and learn how to design custom agents. Once these foundations are in place, we will look at how to expose and consume Business Central through the standard MCP server. Finally, we will move to more advanced scenarios: creating enterprise-grade agents with Azure Logic Apps Agent Loop, and building model-independent, multi-agent solutions with .NET and Microsoft Agent Framework.
