It was late 2010. I wasn’t sleeping well. Now, the sorts of things that usually keep people up at night are career challenges, relationship problems, or money issues. None of that, however, was responsible for my sleep deprivation. No, what was troubling me … was data. Since the mid-twentieth century, computers had given us the ability to comprehensively track data electronically. Over the decades since then, thousands, if not millions, of databases had been created by companies and individuals. That wasn’t the problem. the problem was that most of those databases had completely different programming, interfaces, and applications, which made it impossible for them to communicate with each other and exchange information. At first, it wasn’t a big deal. Everyone was just excited to have the ability to track data. How the data was collected and what format it was in were secondary concerns. But then, as more data became available—especially with the rise of the internet—data became critically important for companies in many areas: marketing, operations, finance, and other industry-specific functions. However, most of the time, different databases served each department. Increasingly, there was a need for these systems to work together, but legacy systems often obstructed that. The longer these systems stayed isolated, the greater the risk that a company would become less efficient, less productive, and less competitive.
