This handbook arrives at a moment when the need for a culturally grounded political psychology has never been more pressing. Across the globe, democratic institutions are under strain, populist movements are reshaping political landscapes, migration is transforming the cultural composition of societies, and long-standing structures of inequality are being simultaneously challenged and reinforced. Mainstream political psychology, with its reliance on surveys, experimental paradigms, and cause-effect models, has generated valuable insights into political attitudes and behavior. Yet it has also revealed persistent blind spots: a tendency toward individualism, an overreliance on static snapshots of opinion, and a frequent neglect of the meaning-making processes through which people experience, interpret, and act upon political life (Carriere, 2022, 2024). The fifteen chapters assembled in this volume make a collective case for a different kind of political psychology: one that acknowledges culture as the very medium through which political reality is constituted. Together, these works articulate a vision of cultural political psychology as a field with its own theoretical commitments, methodological sensibilities, and substantive reach.
