The first version of this book on data science was written and published ten years ago with the title Data Mining for Managers, when the word data mining was more commonly accepted by practitioners. Of course, the discipline has evolved since then, and the more commonly accepted name today is now data science. Yet the principles, methodologies, and approaches remain the same. There have, however, been tremendous developments in the use of unstructured data for Natural Language Processing (NLP) and text analytics, as well as the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the development of analytics solutions.
Besides my career as a data scientist, my role as a part-time professor allowed me to utilize the original version of this book as a reference source for a number of my teaching courses. Given all the developments in the past decade, however, I felt a compelling need to update the original version. This revised version of the book still provides the necessary foundation of knowledge in data science, which, as stated above, really has not changed over time. Yet at the same time it is my hope that it provides a perspective on how these newer developments in AI and unstructured data can be applied within the discipline of data science.
