When we first began designing and developing for virtual reality (VR), the landscape felt incredibly vast – and equally unmapped. As researchers, educators, and practitioners scattered across various European institutions, we each found ourselves confronting the exact same hurdles. Whether we were building immersive training simulations, educational tools, or interactive narratives, we repeatedly bumped into the limits of traditional 2D design. The rules we had relied on for years to build intuitive screen-based interfaces suddenly broke down when the user’s entire body became the interface. We spent countless hours gathering engine documentation, sifting through academic papers on spatial cognition, and learning through trial and error. It became clear that while the hardware for spatial computing was advancing at breakneck speed, the shared language and standardized methodologies for designing these experiences were lagging. This book is born out of a profound need for a practical, unified, and actionable framework for VR design. It is the result of years of cross-disciplinary collaboration between teams at Lodz University of Technology, Miguel Hernández University, the University of Aveiro, and the University of Vigo. Through our collective work on numerous European research projects and industry applications, we set out to bridge the gap between abstract academic theory and the daily realities of production. Our goal with this handbook is not to offer a philosophical meditation on the nature of reality or immersion. Instead, we have written the manual we wished we had when we started. It is a practical tool kit designed to help you navigate the unique challenges of embodied interaction. In these pages, you will find our VR Heuristics 1.0 – a structured framework adapted specifically for spatial environments. We introduce the concept of the “comfort budget,” teaching you how to balance visual fidelity and locomotion with human physiological limits. We break down the translation of familiar 2D user interface (UI) patterns into diegetic, world-locked equivalents that make sense in 3D space. Crucially, we have positioned accessibility and inclusive design as a foundational pillar of the design process.
