ای مردمان ای مردمان از من نیاید مردمی
O people, O people, I cannot be like you;
دیوانه هم نندیشد آن کاندر دل اندیشیده‌ام
the madman even does not meditate what I have meditated in my heart.
امروز عقل من ز من یک بارگی بیزار شد
Today all at once my reason has abominated with me;
خواهد که ترساند مرا پنداشت من نادیده‌ام
it would like to intimidate me, thinking that I didn’t notice its leaving.
در دیده من اندرآ وز چشم من بنگر مرا
“Put yourself behind my eyes and see me as I see myself, for
زیرا برون از دیده‌ها منزلگهی بگزیده‌ام
I have chosen to dwell in a place you cannot see.”
من از برای مصلحت در حبس دنیا مانده‌ام
For a good purpose I have imprisoned in the prison of this world;
حبس از کجا من از کجا مال که را دزدیده‌ام
what have I to do with prison? Whose property have I stolen?
تو مست مست سرخوشی من مست بی‌سر سرخوشم
You are drunk, drunk and happy, I am drunk and happy, without a head;
تو عاشق خندان لبی من بی‌دهان خندیده‌ام
you are a lover with laughing lips, I am laughing without any mouth.
چندانک خواهی درنگر در من که نشناسی مرا
“Study me as much as you like, you will not know me,
زیرا از آن کم دیده‌ای من صدصفت گردیده‌ام
for I differ in a hundred ways from what you see me to be.”
در زخم او زاری مکن دعوی بیماری مکن
Do not bewail his blow, do not claim sickness;
صد جان شیرین داده‌ام تا این بلا بخریده‌ام
I have given a hundred sweet lives to purchase this calamity.
پیش طبیبش سر بنه یعنی مرا تریاق ده
Bow your head to the physician saying, “Give me the antidote,
زیرا در این دام نزه من زهرها نوشیده‌ام
for in this pleasant net I have swallowed many poisons.”
