The amount of material presented to first-year medical students is overwhelming. The tendency for students is to use brute force and attempt to simply “memorize” everything. But there is a better way. During medical school, the trick is to focus on understanding all these complex topics and to think about long-term mastery. If you focus on mastery, the material is much more likely to “stick.” Simply memorizing a list works for a test tomorrow but not 2 years later when you sit for board exams or walk into an exam room to see a patient. The figures in the book are not exhaustive diagrams documenting every nook and cranny of a particular region, but instead they are all simple diagrams focusing on one or two anatomical relationships that explain clinical scenarios. The purpose of this text is obviously not an exhaustive deep dive into every aspect of neuroanatomy. There are numerous other books that have done this. Likewise, it is not meant to be just a quick overview. Rather, it is meant to present each topic with clinical scenarios in mind. Hopefully, it will help first-year students with their course, second-year students looking for a reveiw before boards and rotations, and more advanced students as a refresher for residency. Everyone needs a study break now and then. I have added several Historical Snippets at the end of some of the chapters. They are short and only skim the surface of each topic. To me they are interesting stories about famous people in medicine. This third edition includes sections on the peripheral nerves, most of the figures are updated, and there are several new chapters. Thank you to Ashley Strube for several pictures. Drs. Julia Alexander and Josheph Slusher graciously supplied the MRIs and other radiographs. Thanks to Dr. Charles Hubbard who pointed me in the right direction with the story about Abraham Lincoln and the chicken bone. Finally, thanks to all my students for all the questions over the years. You do not realize it but every time you ask a question, the professor learns something also. And as anyone who has authored a book knows, the main reason to author a book is to learn something new.
