Home automation continues to evolve rapidly. What was once primarily about remotely switching lights or scheduling devices has expanded into an ecosystem of connected sensors, local and cloud services, multiple communication protocols, custom hardware, advanced automation logic, and, increasingly, artificial intelligence. Home Assistant has evolved alongside these technologies and provides a flexible platform for bringing them together in a single home automation environment. The idea for this second book came largely from feedback I received from readers of my first book, Building Smart Home Automation Solutions with Home Assistant. Some readers asked about technologies that were not covered, such as Zigbee, while others expected certain subjects to go further or provide a deeper and more advanced treatment. At the same time, while writing the first book, there were many technologies, tools, protocols, sensors, and project ideas that I simply did not have the opportunity to include or discuss in more depth. Together, these factors motivated me to write this second book and explore many of those subjects beyond the foundations covered previously. After completing my first book, I also remained as motivated as ever to talk about home automation, experiment with new technologies, and find new ways of integrating hardware and software into useful systems. I am especially interested in seeing where Home Assistant, embedded devices, local processing, artificial intelligence, new wireless protocols, and other adjacent technologies will take home automation next. This book can therefore be considered a next step after Building Smart Home Automation Solutions with Home Assistant, but reading the first book is not a requirement. If you already have a working Home Assistant installation and are familiar with its basic concepts, this book can also serve as a step forward into technologies or approaches that you may not have explored before. The intention of this book is not to suggest that every subject will be advanced or completely new to you. Home automation brings together many different disciplines, including software, networking, electronics, embedded systems, communication protocols, cybersecurity, cloud services, and artificial intelligence. You may already know one of these areas very well and decide to move quickly through that material. In another chapter, however, you may encounter a technology or approach that you have never used before. The examples and projects presented throughout the book are practical implementations. The configurations, devices, communication methods, and automations described in the projects were implemented and tested before and during the development of the book. Home Assistant and the adjacent technologies used with it continue to evolve, so interfaces, menu locations, software versions, and individual configuration options may change after publication. The underlying concepts and development approaches, however, should provide a foundation that you can adapt as these technologies evolve. I hope this book encourages you not only to reproduce the projects presented here, but also to modify them, combine their ideas, and create solutions that address your own needs. If you learn even one useful concept, discover one technology that encourages you to experiment, or find one project idea that improves your own home automation system, I will consider the purpose of this book accomplished.
