Writing this book was a profound journey into the world of women who were forced to flee their homes due to wars and crises. It was not an easy exploration— full of contradictions and difficult material documenting injustice and oppression. Nor was it a fast research pathway, but it was a deeply rewarding experience; the women I met continue to inspire my work and motivate me to stand in solidarity with those whose voices may go unheard.
Behind every story of displacement is the silence of suffering, and faith and resilience speaking louder than despair. I am aware that the women I had the privilege to meet only revealed to me a window into their lives and so much more could not be expressed in words. Still, we came together and shared our interactions based on humanity, humility and hope for a better tomorrow. Our faith often connected us, too.
I wrote this book to challenge widespread misconceptions about religion in relation to violence against women (VAW). Too often, religion is misread, flattened or blamed for women’s suffering. Yet the realities I encountered tell a more complex story—one in which faith can be a source of fortitude as well as a source of struggle.
I did not know what women would tell me when I began. Their stories—raw, painful and deeply human—redirected the trajectory of my research. I quickly discovered that amid the weight of unresolved pain lies a paradox: a capacity for extraordinary strength and survival. Because to witness unresolved pain is to glimpse the hidden shape of resilience.
Since 2018, I have wrestled with questions that shaped this work and, at times, kept me company through late nights and crowded airports: How do we navigate violence and displacement in a world that often overlooks women’s voices? How do we turn noise about religion contributing to violence into a constructive dialogue for protection? The answers did not arrive as theories. They came as stories.
I sought to listen, and to build bridges between research, policy and practice. What women shared with me far exceeded any neat categories: stories of resilience and suffering, of hope and despair, of faith as both a resource and a challenge. These voices form the foundation of this book.
I must confess, I did not plan to write a book. I was asked to carry a trust. The pages that follow are an attempt to honour it—with analysis rooted in practice, and practice guided by evidence. VAW remains one of the critical global challenges spreading across borders and systems. To save lives, new paradigms for theory, policy and practice in the face of global displacement are needed—now, more urgently than ever. As global displacement grows amid protracted conflicts, climate-related mobility and human-made disasters—and as women’s rights face alarming rollbacks—this book seeks to contribute to solutions that address violence against those forced to flee, especially women who are disproportionately affected.
I hope that this book will land on the night tables of changemakers and will not let them sleep until the bureaucratic machinery of humanitarian, migration and religious systems starts moving in the right direction to protect women’s lives. The very systems designed for women’s protection—multiple human rights mechanisms, humanitarian and migration systems—might undergo major transformation to create more inclusive humanitarian futures. Clearly women’s diverse experiences in this book are connected by their experiences of systems that failed to protect them. Here comes the unexplored place of religion in addressing women’s crises, which I endeavour to uncover in this volume.
In some humanitarian spaces I have worked in, secularised frameworks have marginalised the worldviews and faith needs of affected populations, eschewing religious orientation and ignoring the worldview of those they sought to help. Stigma around religion permeated the microcosm of humanitarian work. I also observed intersectionality being narrowed to ‘gender-only’ approaches, diluting attention to intersecting identities—including religion, as though gender could exist in isolation. In the haste to save lives, the complex interplay of social relations and identities shaping vulnerability and privilege was often overlooked.
Authors who inspired me to undertake this research direction include Elena Fiddian-Qasmieyah, Alistair Ager and Elżbieta Goździak, who advocate for integrating spiritual and cultural sensitivity into refugee assistance—seeing it as essential for restoring dignity and fostering recovery, not just meeting survival needs. As you will see in the unfolding chapters, intersectional, socioecological and resilience theories inspired me to experiment and connect these approaches to achieve a stronger conceptual framework for understanding lived experiences of religion and its ambiguity.
Having explored how women experience violence and displacement—where suffering was often deeply embedded in spiritual dimensions and faith provided coping mechanisms—this book represents for me a foundation for exploring responses to displacement also embedded in religious and spiritual contexts. But these will be topics to venture into in future books, as I work on connecting mainstream and faith-inspired approaches to aid, to improve outcomes for women.
In future research to develop systematic protection solutions, it is important to continue exploring diverse migratory routes across different religions and return migration as the number of returnees to many post-conflict areas is growing. An integrated intersectional and ecological framework proves to be a flexible framework which can be utilised in future studies across diverse social groups and stages of forced migration.
