Welcome to the seventh edition of Teaching Reading in the 21st Century. In this edition, we reaffirm the values that set our text apart. We believe motivation underlies everything we do in school. Technology and efficiency can take us only so far in fostering a new generation of students who read avidly for enjoyment, knowledge, and enlightenment. Motivation leads children to read widely and deeply, and with that, their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension grow. Every chapter of this book focuses on developing students who will read and, therefore, can read. We believe this is especially vital in the digital age that dominates our lives. When the sixth edition of this book was published in 2020, we were assessing the impact of the Common Core State Standards on curriculum, instruction, and assessment. These new standards pressed schools and educational publishers to create rigorous reading curricula that built knowledge and required an equal focus on fiction and nonfiction. Educators were urged to raise the rigor of the texts that children read. Instructionally, the Common Core advocated close reading, a style in which short texts were read deeply to uncover meaning and students wrote about the ideas in the texts. Assessments followed suit: students took complex tests at the end of the year and were rigorously screened and monitored throughout the year, making teaching and learning more precise and efficient. As educators were digesting the impact of the Common Core State Standards, a new movement, the Science of Reading, began to significantly influence reading instruction. The Science of Reading is not a method of teaching reading but a phrase that represents 50 years of reading research that form the foundation, walls, roof, and interior of our textbook. For some, the Science of Reading is about teaching children to recognize words; it is about phonics instruction. For us, the Science of Reading is about phonics as well as the development of fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and motivation. For us, the Science of Reading is about fitting all this instruction into classrooms when your school district allocates 90 minutes a day for reading instruction and when students have different needs. While these educational trends shape what and how we teach, the digital world is playing an increasingly prominent role in our classrooms and homes, as our lives move from paper to screens. In the previous edition, we presented new research on teaching students to read, write, revise, and take tests online. The Internet makes new demands on our students. They must know how to search for information, evaluate its truthfulness, and synthesize what they read. Not an easy task for an adult, let alone an elementary or middle school student. In this edition of the book, we consider how artificial intelligence (AI) will affect your life as well as that of your students. We want to help teachers and their students use these new technologies effectively and carefully.
