This book is designed to explore language-in-education policy change, specifically the integration of learners’ home languages in multilingual education (MLE), a theme with which both of us have enthusiastically engaged as researchers and technical consultants throughout our careers. When our scholarly pursuits first led us to collaborate decades ago, we found resonance between Kosonen’s experience in Southeast Asia – and more broadly in the Asia and Pacific region – and Benson’s work in Sub-Saharan African and Latin American countries. Since then, we have each expanded our regional emphases, continuing to find common ground as well as noting where each local and regional context provides unique lessons to be learned. Annual conferences of the Comparative and International Education Society have provided not only meeting spaces, but also ways to reflect on our ideas with diverse scholars working in similar spaces. Many of those scholars are esteemed contributors to this book, joining some of Benson’s former (post-)graduate students from Teachers College, Columbia University, and colleagues from universities and international organizations who we have met through our work. We are particularly pleased that both our field and this book are including more and more members of non-dominant language communities as respected research collaborators and authors.
