First and foremost, the topic of the project is a decisive impulse of origin. The question of the causes of poverty, violence, and global crises – together with the challenges of cultural identities and religious plurality – has led to an interculturally sensitive, globally-oriented form of theology that is attentive to the social contexts of the global South. In this sense, intercultural theological reflection sees itself as an “interpreter” between different experiences and interpretations of “Salvation in a Crisis-Ridden World.” Furthermore, intercultural theology is also the usual work in mission, the translation of texts, and the challenges of a worldwide Christian community, which leads us to an intercultural theological reflection.
The articles in this volume deal with the various biblical concepts of salvation. What is one saved from? How does salvation work? Do we understand salvation as something present or a future event? What is the difference between consolation and redemption? How can theologians responsibly speak of salvation and proclaim the Saviour in a world shaken by crises? Questions upon questions that cry out for answers.
The project idea was born during the coronavirus pandemic. It is a cooperation between an OT scholar, Nicoletta Gatti in Ghana, an intercultural theologian, Franz Gmainer-Pranzl in Salzburg, and a NT scholar, Beate Kowalski in Dortmund. Three online conferences (11th-12th January 2023; 13th-14th July 2023; 4th-5th Jan 2024), each with up to 100 participants from all over the world, have taken place since then. Now that the manuscript is ready for printing, further global crises and wars have arisen. The topic is, therefore, more relevant than ever. Will theologians find an audience for their message?
The authors investigate challenges in our crisis-ridden world and the concept of salvation. They investigate global and national issues (violence and religious fundamentalism, peace efforts, reconciliation processes, migration, and the climate crisis). Scholars from different (academic) cultures ensure a global perspective and work toward intercultural dialogical hermeneutics. They reflect on their interpretation process, the correlation between their cultural context, their chosen methodology, interpretation, and hermeneutics. All papers pay attention to contextual hermeneutical principles (dialogical hermeneutics, comparative hermeneutics, etc.), methods, and approaches that do justice to the Biblical text and the readers’ context.
The volume is divided into three parts: The first part deals with fundamental concepts. Franz Gmainer-Pranzl gives insight into the research fields of intercultural theology. This is followed by the first main section with contributions from Old Testament exegesis. Key biblical texts from the Torah, the Nebiim and Ketubim are examined in terms of their concepts of salvation and the respective cultural background of the author. In the Torah section Alexander Salakpi deals with “Blood and Salvation: A Study of Two Traditions – Jewish and Eʋe,” John Baptist Antony with “Survival and Wellbeing as Salvation: A Study in the Hagar Narratives in Genesis from Dalit Feminine Perspective,” and Jobymon Skaria with “Meeting Between Divinity and Humanity as a Paradigm for Advancing Intercultural Dialogical Hermeneutics: An Intertextual Dialogue Between Abraham’s Arbitration (Gen 18:22b-33) and Pottan Theyyam.”
The prophetic theology is the subject of Luma A. Kudher OP, who investigates in “Curse and Salvation in David and Shimei Narrative (2 Sam–1 Kings),” and Emem Opoku-Agyemang, who presents “The House-Help System as Modern-Day Slavery: An Intercultural Reading of Isaiah 58:1–9 in the Context of Ghana.” Finally, Kojo Okyere reflects on “Rethinking Sin and Salvation in Ghanaian Christianity: Contextualising Selected Prophetic Oracles on Salvation.”
The OT section concludes with contributions on Wisdom theology: Nicoletta Gatti discusses the difficult issue of theodicy in her article “Suffering and Prosperity Preaching: Intercultural Reading of Job 22–27.”
