Connected vehicle (CV) technology is expected to revolutionize future transportation systems by enabling real-time information exchange and content delivery through vehicular networks. By leveraging vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, a broad set of safety-critical and efficiency-oriented applications, such as cooperative perception, coordinated driving, remote operation, and content distribution, can be enabled to expand situational awareness, reduce response time, and smooth traffic flow. To support these advancements, vehicular networks must meet strin-gent requirements for global connectivity, low latency, and high reliability. Terres-trial networks, constrained by fixed infrastructure layouts, often struggle to maintain consistent network service across remote areas, rural regions, and during emergencies. Satellite-terrestrial vehicular networks (STVNs), which integrate low Earth orbit satellites to supplement terrestrial infrastructure, offer a heterogeneous architecture that provides resilient and ubiquitous connectivity. However, in STVNs, different terrestrial deployment strategies and satellite constellation designs lead to varying network availability, while inherent satellite mobility results in dynamic satellite coverage and visibility windows for CVs. These heterogeneities pose significant challenges in ensuring continuous and reliable network service in STVNs. Further-more, in STVNs, diverse applications rely on multidimensional resources across communication, computing, and caching from both satellite and terrestrial networks, each exhibiting distinct constraints and time-varying availability. The spatiotemporal demand fluctuations driven by CV mobility further complicate the coordination of heterogeneous networks and the orchestration of multidimensional resources. As a result, effective network design and efficient resource management are essential for STVNs to operate reliably under the highly dynamic network environment and diversified service requirements. In this monograph, we investigate resource management in STVNs, aiming to provide reliable network services for CVs and enable low-complexity and intelligent resource management. Chapter 1 provides an overview of STVN concepts, the slicing-based two-stage resource management framework, key technical challenges, and the objective of this monograph. Chapter 2 investigates state-of-the-art research work, including performance modeling and scheme design for STVN resource management at both reservation and operation stages. Chapter 3 develops theoretical communication models to characterize STVN performance under various satellite constellation configurations and terrestrial deployment strategies. The analysis evaluates key performance metrics, including service availability, outage prob-ability, and throughput, revealing the joint impact of satellite mobility and terrestrial layout on network reliability and coverage. These results provide the analytical foundation for the design of resource management schemes in STVNs. Then, Chaps. 4 and 5 investigate resource management schemes for STVNs under a slicing-based two-stage framework. Specifically, Chap. 4 focuses on the reservation stage, studying HD map distribution in STVNs and proposing an adaptive resource slicing scheme to guarantee service-level agreements by coordinating time-varying satellite and terrestrial resources. Chapter 5 focuses on the operation stage, addressing cooperative environment sensing in STVNs and developing a real-time resource scheduling scheme under different connectivity patterns to cope with dynamic network conditions and varying service demands. Finally, Chap. 6 concludes the monograph and discusses potential future research directions. This monograph presents a systematic principle that provides a unified theoretical and practical framework for STVN design. This principle’s primary value lies in its ability to: (1) boost efficiency by optimizing the use of multidimensional network resources; (2) maximize performance by fully leveraging the complementary strengths of satellite and terrestrial networks in vehicular environments; and (3) lay the groundwork for building resilient, scalable, and adaptive vehicular communication systems. By providing these essential design guidelines and analytical tools, this monograph greatly contributes to the evolution of intelligent transportation and inspires future innovations in integrated satellite-terrestrial systems. We would like to thank Prof. Weihua Zhuang, Dr. Conghao Zhou, and Dr. Shisheng Hu from the Broadband Communications Research (BBCR) group at the University of Waterloo, for their valuable suggestions and help to this monograph.
