We are very pleased to have been invited to edit a second edition of the popular Fundamentals of Children’s Applied Pathophysiology. The new edition, Fundamentals of Children and Young People’s Applied Pathophysiology, has been thoroughly updated and revised to ensure it aligns with the evolving needs of its readers. This edition now includes 20 chapters, with the addition of five new chapters that reflect recent developments in practice and advances in the field. Learning the Language, a chapter that focuses on the terminology associated with pathophysiology, is available online. These changes to the book aim to enhance the relevance and applicability of the content, ensuring that readers are equipped with the most up‐to‐date knowledge and insights to inform their practice and improve care for children and young people. To ensure the delivery of safe and effective care to children, young people and their families, it is vital that caregivers understand the underlying pathophysiology of the child or young person’s condition. The primary aim of this book is to make the complex subject of pathophysiology more accessible and engaging, enabling readers to apply their knowledge across various care contexts. The body has an extraordinary ability to respond to disease through various physiological and psychological processes, compensating for changes caused by disease; these are the pathophysiological mechanisms. Some case studies also include the Paediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS). In the United Kingdom, different care providers use different PEWS charts, and they may calculate PEWS in varied ways. The PEWS charts included in this book are examples, and it is essential to become familiar with the PEWS chart that is used in your workplace. Where relevant, key information is highlighted in boxed sections, such as red, yellow and green flags or medicines management, to aid in delivering care to vulnerable and anxious children, young people and families.
