The idea came from my time working on energy development projects with professionals from different disciplines. They were often very good in their areas of expertise whether it was finance, gender issues, economics, monitoring and evaluation, and so on. Very often, they lacked basic knowledge of energy, and they had to learn as the project progressed. As you can imagine, projects are much more successful if everyone involved understands enough basics to ask the right questions. This book was written to help people, who are not energy professionals, understand the basics of energy. It covers energy topics from technical aspects of electricity generation and transmission to energy policy. It is written to inform but not overwhelm so that the material can be easily digested and the reader is armed with knowledge to speak intelligently about these topics. The book ends with a framework for sustainable development, focused on energy but applicable to other sectors. A recurring theme is the necessity for stakeholder engagement in identifying both the problem and the solution. Finally, some examples of sustainable and unsustainable projects are presented. Because most of my experience is with projects in Africa, the focus of the book is Africa. The general themes are applicable to other parts of the world but specific examples are always from Africa.
