The erosion of social cohesion and looming political polarization sit at the heart of today’s most pressing societal questions. As democratic institutions appear to waver in the absence of widespread social support, political discourse fragments among increasingly complex ideological groups and communities form along increasingly complex lines of identity and affiliation, the ability to understand what binds and drives societies apart is more crucial than ever before. At the same time, social science is witnessing the rise of computational social science (CSS)—a scientific paradigm that blends observational data of unprecedented scale with the power of computationally driven statistical and formal modeling. Its tools—from machine learning to social network analysis, and from agent-based modeling to microsimulation—are well-suited to study social cohesion and polarization with exceptional precision and scale. The challenge the field is facing is to further develop its domain-specific language and body of knowledge, to foster a shared understanding of CSS and social phenomena, beyond description and prediction alone. This volume brings together a group of researchers from various backgrounds and career stages. It opens with two discussions of the conceptual and methodological foundations for rigorous computational social science on cohesion and polarization and is followed by nine original chapters that show
case state-of-the-art applications. Together, they offer a lens into the practice of CSS and serve to inspire social cohesion and polarization researchers to follow in their footsteps. This book emerged from two collaborative research incubators designed specifically to foster interdisciplinary collaboration. As detailed in Chap. 12, the incubators expand the concept of summer schools to not just educate, but to start collaborations. We hope this book informs and inspires.
