This book is, as its title suggests, an introduction to the mathematics of continuous breathers. It serves as the starting point for a theory that has developed in many directions over the past twenty years and is now under intense scrutiny and active research. Accordingly, what is presented here are the first steps-the initial results needed to understand the main goals and challenges in the study of breathers. Breathers are fascinating objects, with striking mathematical and visual representations that highlight the beauty of these phenomena. Geometrically, they can be elegantly characterized as curves with zero mean, while physically they represent dynamical, periodic motions in longlived scalar field models. They are ubiquitous in almost every dispersive model with integrability properties, yet they also appear in nonintegrable equations. Consequently, for almost every proposed classification in breather theory, there exists a counterexample that does not satisfy the given definition. In this sense, breathers are notoriously difficult to classify. There are several approaches to studying breathers, and here we present the most significant ones developed in recent years, with emphasis on rigorous proofs and results that have led to a limited but coherent understanding of these solutions. One may study breathers through integrable techniques such as the inverse scattering transform, or by using Bäcklund transformations to deduce specific properties. Alternatively, nonintegrable techniques can establish results applicable to breathers beyond integrable models. In any case, one feature remains constant: breathers capture highly intricate dynamics in the underlying theory while retaining a remarkable simplicity in the resolution of the problems they address. The preparation of these notes began many years ago, in 2014. The task was not easy, as much of the theory was still evolving. More than a decade later, it is gratifying to see that numerous important results by many researchers have since emerged. This volume is therefore only the first installment in a planned series of three books on continuous rigorous breather theory. The two forthcoming volumes will focus, respectively, on the nonlinear Schrödinger model in full detail (not covered here), and on deeper topics and open questions. We expect both to be available in the near future, although the amount of material has grown enormously in recent years. The opening chapter (Chapter 1) sets the stage by defining breathers, presenting their geometric and physical characterizations, and situating them within the broader context of dispersive equations. It introduces the main equations where breathers arise and outlines the challenges in their classification. The second chapter (Chapter 2) turns to the analytical framework, developing the functional setting and core estimates required for a precise mathematical treatment, and discussing how integrability and nonintegrability influence the behavior of solutions. The third chapter (Chapter 3) focuses on presenting the most important breather solutions. The following chapter (Chapter 4) explores the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) breather, probably the simplest breather in the literature. Foundational tools and results are introduced to the reader, and the most basic properties are proved. The most important proved property is the stability of these solutions. Chapter 5 then details how one can deal with mKdV breathers using the integrability theory, specially when using weighted estimates. Chapter 6 presents recent results related to existence of multi-breathers and the proposed cubic Whitham model, where a hypothesized breather is proposed. Chapter 7 deals now with numerical aspects related to the stability of breathers. Chapter 8 is devoted to the study of the Gardner breather, a close relative to the mKdV breather, which is very important when dealing with general nonlinearities. Chapter 9 now deals with the sine-Gordon. Chapter 10 describes recent results on the uniqueness of these breathers, and the parabolic case. Chapter 11 describes the zero-mean periodic in space breathers, where proposed stability results are reviewed, with a final section dealing with the only known examples of nonzero mean breathers. Finally, Chapter 12 deals with the Gardner and mKdV hierarchies, their breathers and their variational characterization. As mentioned before, we have chosen to write a different monograph dealing with the nonlinear Schrödinger breathers, and many deep topics such as nonexistence of breathers, asymptotic stability versus nonexistence, and higher dimensional breathers. Balancing rigor with accessibility, this text serves mathematical, physical, and computational interests. By blending geometric intuition, analysis, and explicit constructions, it highlights the complexity and elegance of breathers, offering a coherent overview and inspiration for future research.
