When we gather at the Science and Technology in Society forum, we do so with a simple but demanding conviction: science and technology must always be considered in relation to humanity’s future. The forum was established to create precisely this space—a place where leaders from public, private, and academic spheres can step back from immediate pressures and examine, together, the long-term lights and shadows of scientific and technological change. That founding purpose remains unchanged. If anything, it has grown more urgent. Humanity has traveled a very long road. Over hundreds of thousands of years, our species spread across the globe, built civilizations, and gradually improved the conditions of life. Yet for most of history, progress was painfully slow. It was only in the past two centuries—after the Industrial Revolution—that the speed of transformation accelerated dramatically. Science and technology became the principal engines of that acceleration. They lengthened human lives, expanded material prosperity, and created capacities our ancestors could scarcely have imagined. At the same time, they also brought us to a threshold. We now face climate instability, resource constraints, widening social inequality, deepening division, and continuing conflict. Stability can no longer be assumed. The future of our civilization is no longer something that unfolds automatically. It depends on choices we make deliberately and collectively. This book is written from within that sense of urgency, but it is not written in despair. It is written from the conviction that there is still hope—and that hope lies not in technology alone, but in the ways we connect technology with society, values, institutions, and human purpose. In my opening speech at the STS forum, I argued that new foundations for prosperity are emerging: sustainable biomass, renewable energy, and what I have called the urban mine—the vast stock of recoverable materials already circulating in society. Together, these indicate a fundamental shift from a civilization of extraction to one of circularity. Yet such a transition is not simply a matter of invention. It requires social systems, public participation, institutional redesign, and new forms of shared commitment. That is why the second “S” in STS matters so deeply. Science and technology cannot be separated from society. A second source of hope lies in knowledge itself. Humanity has accumulated an extraordinary store of scientific, technological, tacit, and cultural knowledge. The problem is not only whether knowledge exists, but whether it is connected and mobilized. Each year at the STS forum, I use the image of a porcupinefish as a metaphor for fragmented knowledge: each spine stands apart, as our disciplines and domains of expertise too often do. Knowledge, when disconnected, cannot function as a whole. But if those spines can be connected—if the right combinations of knowledge can be mobilized for the right purposes— then humanity can move forward in new ways. This is where artificial intelligence enters the story. AI, especially generative AI, has the capacity to link knowledge across domains at a speed and scale previously unimaginable. But this very power makes the question of governance unavoidable. AI can help integrate knowledge, yet it can also distort values, divide societies, and magnify existing inequalities if it is misused. It must therefore remain under human control—a servant to human purpose and dignity, never a master. This conviction animates the present volume. The chapters that follow are not merely records of discussion. They represent an attempt to move from dialogue to direction, from isolated debate to a broader global vision. The sessions collected in this book reflect the STS forum’s enduring engagements: first, to harness science and technology for the public good; second, to reform society through dialogue and consensus; and third, to use AI and other emerging tools to connect knowledge and accelerate solutions. These engagements are not abstract ideals. They are practical tasks. They shape how we think about energy, resources, health, inclusion, education, communication, diplomacy, business, and innovation. They also shape how we imagine the future of civilization itself. The structure of the book reflects this broad ambition. Part I, “AI and Beyond,” begins where many of today’s most urgent questions begin: with artificial intelligence. Yet the discussion is not confined to technical capability. The chapters in this section ask what AI means for the next decade of global development, what kinds of roadmaps are needed to guide its deployment, and how major institutions—especially universities—must adapt if they are to remain places where knowledge is created, challenged, and validated responsibly. The chapter on the future university is particularly important in this respect. Universities are among the places where many of the foundational breakthroughs behind AI originated. They are therefore not only users of AI; they are also stewards of its future. The questions raised there—about academic integrity, strategic leadership, cultural diversity, global equity, and public trust—are emblematic of the broader challenge before us.
