Africa is confronting a convergence of environmental and social pressures, including climate change, biodiversity loss, resource degradation, rapid urbanization, and growing demands on land and water systems. These challenges expose important limitations in governance approaches that rely on sectoral fragmentation, centralized decision-making, and narrowly technocratic solutions. At the same time, diverse governance practices emerging across the continent demonstrate how Indigenous knowledge systems (IKS), local institutions, scienti¬c expertise, and digital technologies can interact to support more adaptive responses to socio-ecological change. This Element examines the potential of transformative governance as an approach to navigating complexity, uncertainty, and interdependence in African socio-ecological systems. It develops a framework that brings together relational governance, IKS, and arti¬cial intelligence (AI) within a broader perspective of learning-based and adaptive governance. Rather than treating AI as a substitute for human judgement or local knowledge, the Element conceptualizes it as one component within a broader hybrid intelligence system in which predictive analytics, ecological knowledge, cultural values, and community-based decision-making interact. Drawing on examples from water governance, agroforestry, forest management, pastoralist adaptation, and climate resilience initiatives across Africa, the study explores how different forms of knowledge are combined in practice to address environmental challenges. The analysis highlights the contributions of Indigenous and local knowledge to ecological monitoring, anticipatory governance, and long-term stewardship, while also examining the opportunities and risks associated with AI-enabled governance. Particular attention is given to questions of data sovereignty, algorithmic bias, digital inequality, and the ethical implications of integrating AI into community-based governance systems. The Element argues that Africa’s governance experiences are signi¬cant not because they represent a single or uniquely African model, but because they offer important insights into how diverse knowledge systems can be mobilized to address complex environmental problems. By examining both the possibilities and limitations of knowledge integration, the study contributes to debates on Earth system governance, environmental justice, Indigenous governance, and the governance of emerging technologies. It concludes that more inclusive, relational, and knowledge-diverse governance arrangements are essential for building resilience and sustainability in an increasingly uncertain Anthropocene.
