Networks have a habit of disappearing when they work. A user opens an application, joins a meeting, reaches a cloud service, or connects from home without needing to think about the interfaces, addresses, switches, routers, wireless radios, firewalls, DNS servers, and protocols involved in making that interaction possible. It is usually only when something stops working that the network becomes visible. Unfortunately, failures rarely introduce themselves clearly. A user does not normally report that a subnet mask is incorrect, a return route is missing, a wireless channel is congested, or a service is listening only on the wrong interface. They report that “the network is down,” “the VPN won’t connect,” “the Wi-Fi is slow,” or “I can’t reach the server.” The real skill in networking is therefore not simply knowing what each technology does. It is being able to take an imprecise symptom and turn it into a sequence of questions that can be answered with evidence. That is the approach of this book. We begin by building an end-to-end picture of network communication. You will see how endpoints, transmission media, switches, routers, firewalls, addresses, and transport protocols contribute to one exchange, and then use the OSI model to separate that exchange into functions that can be tested independently. IPv4 subnetting and CIDR develop the reasoning needed to decide whether a destination is local or remote, while NAT shows what changes when privately addressed systems communicate across another network. IPv6 extends those same concepts into a larger and increasingly important addressing model. Once those foundations are established, the focus shifts from individual addresses to the infrastructure that carries them. VLANs, Layer 3 switching, routing protocols, firewalls, operating-system routes, and virtual switches all affect the path traffic is allowed to take. Rather than treating these as isolated configuration topics, the book continually returns to the same question: what path should this traffic follow, and what evidence confirms that it actually follows it?
