دیباچه گلستان سعدی با ترجمه انگلیسی

بِسم اللهِ الرَّحمنِ الرَّحیم

 In the Name of God the compassionate, the merciful

منّت خدای را عَزَّ و جل که طاعتش موجب قُربت است و به شکر اندرشْ مزید نعمت، هر نفسی که فرو می‌رود مُمِدّ حیات‌ست و چون برمی‌آید مفرّح ذات، پس در هر نفسی دو نعمت موجودست و بر هر نعمتی شکری واجب

Praise the God of majesty and glory! That his obedience is a cause of getting closer and the gratitude is the reason for the increase of blessings. Every inhale prolongs life and when it’s come out, the delight of the instinct; so in each breath, there are two benefits and each benefit an obligatory gratitude

از دست و زبان که برآید

Whose hand and tongue is capable

کز عهده‌ی شکرش به در آید

 To fulfill the obligations of thanks

اِعملوا آلَ داودَ شکراً وَ قلیلٌ مِن عبادیَ الشکور

Sing praises ye posterity of David, for few of my servants are grateful

بنده همان به که ز تقصیر خویش

For the servant, it is best to confess his weakness

عذر به درگاه خدای آورد

 And implore forgiveness at the court of heaven

ورنه سزاوار خداوندیش

Unless no one is able to fulfill

کس نتواند که به جای آورد

 His duty towards God

باران رحمت بی‌حسابش همه را رسیده و خوان نعمت بی‌دریغش همه جا کشیده پرده‌ی ناموس بندگان به گناه فاحش ندرد و وظیفه‌ی روزی به خطای منکر نبرد

The rain of his infinite mercy has reached all places and the table of his bounty is spread everywhere. He does not tear The veil of honor of the servants and does not cut their daily bestow because of an ugly offense

ای کریمی که از خزانه‌ی غیب

O merciful giver, who out of his hidden treasures

گبر و ترسا وظیفه خوَر داری

 Affordest daily sustenance to Zoroastrians and Christians

دوستان را کجا کنی محروم

When do you want to exclude your friends?

تو که با دشمن این نظر داری

 When you have such treatment regard your enemies!

فرّاش باد صبا را گفته تا فرش زمرّدی (زمردین) بگسترد و دایه‌ی ابر بهاری را فرموده تا بنات نبات در مهد زمین بپرورد درختان را به خلعت نوروزی، قبای سبز ورق در بر گرفته و اطفال شاخ را به قدوم موسم ربیع (نوروز) (گل) کلاه شکوفه بر سر نهاده، عصاره‌ی نالی (تاکی) به قدرت او شهد فایق شده و تخم خرمایی به تربیتش نخل باسق گشته

He ordered the footman of the morning breeze to spread out the emerald carpet and commanded the nurse of vernal clouds to cherish the daughters of plants in the cradle of the Earth, the trees covered the Nowruz robe of green foliage, whilst their offspring, the branches, put on the blossoms at the approach of the season of the roses. By his power, the juice of the cane is converted into delicious honey; and by his mentoring, the kernel of the date has become a lofty palm tree.

ابر و باد و مه و خورشید و فلک در کارند

The cloud, the wind, the moon, the sun, and the sky are busy working

تا تو نانی به کف آریّ و به غفلت نخوری

 That you obtain bread and do not eat it in neglect

همه از بهر تو سرگشته و فرمان بردار

Because of you, they all are obedient

شرط انصاف نباشد که تو فرمان نبری

It would be unfair if you do not obey
