We wrote this textbook to close the gap in computer engineering education between principles of computer architecture and practices to build real microprocessors and systems-on-chip (SoCs). Many excellent books address computer architecture, operating systems, and digital design, but none that we know of connect these ideas together to reach an SoC capable of running an operating system (OS). Moreover, the open RISC-V instructions set architecture (ISA), pioneered at the University of California, Berkeley, has energized the computer architecture field by offering a modern instruction set suitable for hardware implementation in commercial systems, avoiding the intellectual property barriers of ARM, the historical baggage of x86, and the warts of earlier RISC architectures such as MIPS and SPARC. This book shows you how to apply contemporary professional practices to design, verify, and implement a RISC-V SoC with a processor core, memories, and peripherals to support its booting Linux. This book is intended for a graduate or advanced undergraduate course or for self-study. It assumes that you have had introductory courses on digital design and computer architecture at the level of Digital Design and Computer Architecture: RISC-V Edition or Computer Organization and Design: RISC-V Edition. Specifically, you should be comfortable reading and writing C, assembly language, and Verilog and working in a Linux environment. You may get even more out of this book if you’ve taken a second course at the level of Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach or studied operating systems, compilers, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), or chip design.
