This book examines judgment and partnership, emphasizing our conviction that, even as machines advance, people remain a business’s most scarce and valuable resource. Driven by this belief and our collaboration, we explored these ideas and wrote this book. We met in 2015 at 1105 Media. For ten years, we have sat on the same side of the table, wrestling with data and strategy. We returned, again and again, to the question animating this book: now that intelligence can be bought, what is left that only people can do? This book comes from our partnership, which taught us more about that question than any algorithm could. We were not alone. No journey is easy, and no decade of collaboration is filled only with agreement. Still, every day we feel energized by our mission to learn and improve. We believe passionately in the ideas in this book. They are not for executives whose only ambition is to ride out the AI wave, adopt whatever their competitors adopt, and survive. That has never been our interest. If you can be satisfied with that, do not read on. But if you want to lead, build an organization where artificial intelligence and human judgment each do what they do best, and where customers, employees, shareholders, and society win—read on. We are not saying it is easy, but it is worthwhile. Our experience confirms that there is no permanent advantage in technology. There are no permanently excellent companies. Every model your organization buys, your competitors can buy too. For the first time in history, every organization on Earth has access to the same intelligence. What cannot be commoditized is judgment: knowing where to deploy AI and having the nerve to leave it alone. That is what we call the human premium. We have found that cultivating it is the strategic move that matters most. This book challenges companies to close the gap between AI’s promise and its frequent underperformance. Our central tenet is that the gap is not technical. It is psychological, organizational, and strategic. In the pages ahead, we explore these challenges. We provide practical and proven frameworks and methodologies to overcome them. Our aim is to make leading with AI as systematic and actionable as any discipline executives already command. Only then can companies pursue transformation in a way that is both opportunity maximizing and risk-minimizing. No company, large or small, can afford to gamble its future on enthusiasm alone. The ideas in this book were not developed in a lab. They were built over decades in data science, tested in boardrooms, and refined through failures we’ll share honestly. They draw not only from the analytics of AI-driven strategy, but also the all-important human aspects: trust, governance, accountability, and the judgment to act when the machine tells you something your experience says is wrong are all crucial. The human premium has always existed. As AI commoditizes intelligence, the value of human judgment grows. We believe this expansion is the root of the next era of growth. Yet, there is a poor understanding of how to systematically cultivate and capture it, both in theory and in practice. We invite you to read this book and learn how to lead your future.
