This book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Malaysia’s political and economic transformations over the past half-century and to derive insights for escaping the “middle-income trap.” It is the outcome of a research project conducted by the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO) from 2019 to 2021, entitled “Background and Prospects of Political Change in Malaysia.” The discrepancy between the original research project title and the book’s content reflects the dramatic political upheavals that occurred in Malaysia during the research period. While the rapid political developments forced us to make significant changes to our research plan, we believe this ultimately worked in our favor, providing us with an opportunity to examine Malaysia’s long-term political economy comprehensively. This research was also supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) (“Democratization from Competitive Authoritarianism: Political Economy of Malaysia’s Change of Government,” Grant Number 19K01466).
The authors were able to write this book, thanks to the accumulated research by our predecessors at the Institute of Developing Economies. We owe a great deal to the accumulated research spanning the past 50 years, including the Yearbook of Asian Affairs and various Malaysian studies conducted over the years. Further-more, through a JSPS project “Elucidating Interaction Patterns between Politics and Economics in Emerging Countries” (Grant Number 15K21728), conducted primarily at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, we had the opportunity to compare Malaysia with other developing countries. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who participated in these research projects and have been engaged in Malaysian studies and research in developing countries.
Moreover, since we began conducting field research at the Institute of Developing Economies in the 1990s, we could not have developed our “firsthand understand-ing” of Malaysia without the cooperation of hundreds of companies, government agencies, and researchers who accommodated our visits and interviews. Kumagai is particularly grateful to Dr. Zakaria Abdul Rashid (who was executive director at that time) and all the staff at the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER), who accepted him as a visiting researcher and treated him exceptionally well.
