I AM REALISM’S UNFILIAL SON I am realism’s un_lial son. .is is a line I wrote in an afterword titled “A Traitor to Writing” for my novel _e Four Books—a work that now has almost no chance of ever being published in China. In this afterword, I described how I hesitated for a long time before _nally calling myself “a traitor to writing.” I hesitated because this label is simply too great of an honor, of which I know that I’m certainly unworthy—the same way that Lu Xun’s Ah Q was unworthy of being recognized as a member of the Zhao clan. However, the reason I ultimately decided to include this line here is because it occurred to me that many of the deviations from “literary conventions” that appear in _e Four Books are not true cases of betrayal, but rather are merely preliminary clues—hints of what I might write in the future. _is, accordingly, is why I ultimately decided to call myself a traitor to writing.
