We are living through a time of rupture. Humanity has acquired the capac ity to alter planetary systems, engineer life, and design artificial intelli gence that rivals human intelligence; yet existential level crises abound. Ecological destabilization, technological acceleration, geopolitical frag mentation, and hot war flareups, widening inequality and social divisive ness, all converge into what many have described as polycrisis. It is, however, not the first time humanity has faced such seismic shifts. The philosophical roots of the worldview of co-becoming emerged in ear lier epochs of disorientation. The Yijing (易经) or Book of Changes, classic of the eleventh century BCE, articulated a cosmology of change and pat terned transformation in an age of instability. Classical Daoism and Confucianism of the Axial Age emerged amid political disintegration and existential exhaustion, whereas Buddhism matured through centuries of civilizational upheaval. While these traditions differ in their orientation, goals, and paths to higher-order consciousness, they are similar in that they have offered a reconceptualization of the phenomenal world and what it means to be human and ways of inhabiting flux and embracing change. This volume delves into philosophical foundations of the worldview of co-becoming and attempts to expound its contemporary relevance in global ethics and political, social practices. It argues that what is required is not merely policy reform or moral exhortation, but a shift in foundational thinking. At the heart of that shift stands the notion of co-becoming. Simply put, the notion of co-becoming (gongsheng in Chinese and kyōsei in Japanese, sharing the same two Chinese characters 共生) articulates a conception of the world as consisting of mutually embedding, co-existing, and co-generative entities.1 It is introduced here to allow for a reconceptualization of the human condition as a state which is marked by mutually embedding, co-generative, and dynamically transformative entities. The chapters collected in this volume deepen the inquiry initiated in Gongsheng Across Contexts—A Philosophy of Co-Becoming (Gongsheng Across Contexts), published in 2021. While the earlier volume mapped the cross-cultural emergence of the concept, the present collection advances further analysis of the ontological, methodological, ethical, and practical shifts required if co-becoming is to serve as foundational thinking befitting our time.
