The introduction sets out the book’s central claim: that mobile apps operate as affective infrastructures that organise the conditions under which emotional life becomes meaningful. Moving from an earlier concern with platforms as social spaces towards an account of apps as infrastructures of feeling, it develops digital intimacy as an infrastructural rather than interpersonal condition, one in which attachment, recognition, care, and withdrawal are made legible through interface cues, metrics, and feedback systems. The chapter introduces the four concepts that structure the book: affective legibility, calibrated intimacy, emotional governance, and the soft power of apps. Cape Town serves as the site from which the argument is written, and South Africa functions as an epistemic vantage point that exposes assumptions of continuous connectivity and evenly distributed safety embedded in scholarship produced largely in the North. The chapter also sets out the critical autoethnographic method, its empirical archive, and its ethical commitments, before outlining the chapters that follow.
