(The Palgrave Handbook on Right-Wing Populism and Otherness in Global Perspective)، اثری منحصربهفرد در این حوزه به شمار میآید. (Biancalana & Mazzoleni, 2020; Lamour & Varga, 2020; Osuna, 2024; Palonen, 2018; Wodak, 2015).
While othering and populism have long been popular global topics in academia, they have mostly been discussed separately in scholarly books. The Palgrave Handbook on Right-Wing Populism and Otherness in Global Perspective is a unique addition to the literature. To our knowledge, there has been no previous book that focuses on the relationship between othering and right-wing populism on both conceptual and empirical levels. Othering is a recurrent strategy associated with right-wing populist identification and the portrayal of individuals or social groups as distant, deviant or alien, although it is not a new tactic and is not exclusive to right-wing populists (Brons, 2015; Egelhofer et al., 2021; Krämer et al., 2021; Moffitt, 2016; Ostiguy, 2017; Sakki & Pettersson, 2016; Wodak, 2015). Likewise, right-wing populists frequently use denial and blame avoidance tactics to shift responsibility or avoid criticism by scapegoating others for unmerited blame and adverse treatment (Béland & Waddan, 2021; Boin et al., 2009; Bovens et al., 1999; Drabeck & Quarantelli, 2008; Entman, 1993; Graff & Korolczuk, 2022; Hameleers et al., 2017, 2018; Hinterleitner, 2017; Hinterleitner & Sager, 2015; Hood, 2011; Hood et al., 2009, 2016; Iyengar, 1994; Krämer, 2018; Kuipers & Brändström, 2020; Leong & Howlett, 2017; Mortensen, 2012; Novais & Araújo, 2022; Novais & Leite, 2024; Panievsky, 2021; Vis, 2016; Weaver, 1986). But in addition to highlighting how narratives and practices that emphasize differences are fundamental components of populist discourses and attitudes, The Palgrave Handbook on Right-Wing Populism and Otherness in Global Perspective also aims to argue that there is a kind of “meta-othering” of exclusionary conflicts and moral divisions as a controversial distinguishing characteristic of the recent surge in rightwing populist politicians across various locations worldwide. It does this by examining the performative aspects and discursive practices in the rhetoric and actions of right-wing populists as they shape their political identities by adeptly using “floating” or “empty” signifiers (Laclau, 1996, 2005). Right-wing populist leaders often use vague and ambiguous universal ideals to promote their agendas. They have the flexibility to manipulate these conceptualizations to suit their agendas, making them context-specific or malleable. This allows them to conveniently choose and implement the ideals that best serve their purposes (Biancalana & Mazzoleni, 2020; Lamour & Varga, 2020; Osuna, 2024; Palonen, 2018; Wodak, 2015).
