Preface

The power sector has witnessed a number of transformational changes since 1882 when the first coal-based thermal power generation started its journey. During the same time, the world has witnessed another mode of power generation called hydroelectricity on the Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin, USA. In fact, this was the first transition in power generation. In 1907, in Switzerland the first use of pumped storage power generation began. In 1949, mankind discovered new kind of fuel, i.e. gas, and using this as fuel, gas-based power generation commenced. In 1954, in Obninsk, Soviet Union, the first nuclear plant was built.
