The past two decades have witnessed the rapid proliferation of wearable technologies, which are now becoming deeply embedded in daily life, professional environments, and healthcare systems. Among these, ear-related wearables, which include hearing aids, communication headsets, earphones, earbuds, and emerging health-monitoring devices, have evolved into indispensable products for hundreds of millions of users. Yet behind this growth lies a persistent ergonomic challenge, which is that the human ear, particularly the auricle and the external acoustic meatus, is not simply another contact surface for technology but a highly individualized and sensitive anatomical structure. Designing for the ear therefore demands a unique anthropometric perspective, which connects biological diversity with engineering principles and user comfort requirements.
It is within this context that the present book, Engineering Anthropometry of the External Ear for Human–Product Interaction: Methods and Applications of Physical Comfort Experience, has taken shape. The purpose of this book is not only to document the anthropometric characteristics of the auricle and external acoustic meatus but also to explore how these measurements can be translated into predictive models of comfort, design guidelines, and practical tools for product developers. By drawing from ergonomics, human–machine interaction, and design engineering, the book positions itself as both a research monograph and a practical guide, which aims to bridge the gap between theoretical anthropometry and the pressing needs of wearable technology design.
The motivation for writing this book arises from two parallel developments. On one hand, wearable technology has become a central field of innovation, in which companies race to introduce devices that integrate communication, entertainment, health monitoring, and immersive experiences. On the other hand, dissatisfaction with in-ear devices remains common, which is often linked to discomfort, pain, or long-term usability issues. Unlike the hand, the head, or other parts of the body, the ear has received relatively limited attention in mainstream ergonomics. Most design processes still rely on simplified sizing assumptions or limited fit trials, which fail to capture the full variability of ear morphology across sex, age, and population groups. This gap is not merely an academic one, since it has direct consequences for user compliance, safety, and even health. An uncomfortable ear interface may lead users to abandon a device, which can compromise the accuracy of health sensors or increase the risk of ear canal injury. As wearables move deeper into healthcare and extended reality applications, the stakes are even higher, since comfort is no longer a luxury but a prerequisite for long-term adoption and reliable data collection. Addressing this challenge requires a systematic, data-driven, and human-centred framework, which integrates measurement, modelling, and application. This book is an attempt to provide such a framework.
