Welcome to a book on electrical circuit theory, which the author uses in teaching three courses at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU.1 The content of the three courses is resistive circuits, DC circuits, and AC circuits, respectively. This corresponds to the three volumes of the book which are mentioned below. In addition, the author teaches two electrophysics courses that deal with electrostatics and magnetostatics, respectively. These five courses are synchronised and offered in the first year of the power engineering programme at DTU. Volume 1: A Mathematical Approach to Fundamental Electrical Quantities and Resistive Circuits has 4 chapters. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the first two volumes. It also provides some rec-ommendations on how a new student can organise their education and how to work with the first two circuit theory courses corresponding to Volumes 1 and 2. Chapter 2 reviews very fundamental mathematical topics as well as solving systems of equations using matrices and determinants. Chapter 3 introduces fundamental electrical quantities such as current, voltage, electrochemical potential, resistance, and power with an emphasis on electrophysical understanding. This is followed by rules for calculating the sign of current, voltage, and power. Finally, voltage and current generators are introduced. Chapter 4 is a comprehensive review of many different methods for analysing DC circuits with resistors and voltage generators. Volume 2: DC Circuit Theory deals with capacitors, coils, diodes, transistors, and operational amplifiers. It discusses, among other things, the charging and discharging processes for capacitors and coils using first-order differential equations, simple circuits with diodes and transistors, and second-order circuits where there are both coils and capacitors. In addition, many different circuits with operational amplifiers are described. Volume 3: AC Circuit Theory deals with the mathematical description of AC cur-rent, voltage, and power. The chapter continues with the mathematical description of three-phase circuits. Finally, a detailed description of the single-phase transformer and its equivalent diagrams is provided. The last chapter deals with filter circuits. Volumes 2 and 3 are planned for later publication. A textbook for an electronics engineering programme would probably teach students to analyse complicated circuits with a lot of circuit elements using computer programmes. This book does not. It deals with circuits with relatively few circuit elements. However, it goes into depth with mathematical derivations and proofs of the basic relationships and analysis methods. At the same time, emphasis is placed on physical understanding down to the smallest detail. This is reflected in the tests that accompany this book. As a student, one learns to calculate everything manually using mathematics and at the same time understand the physics, which is necessary for power engineering education, where in many cases one considers circuits with relatively few circuit elements.
