Since its inception mor e than fifteen years ago, CENTRIC has been driven by a single, ambitious mission: ‘to bring research into operational reality’ for the benefit of policing and security. Throughout this journey, our work has consistently sought to bridge the gap between academic excellence and operational need, ensuring that research delivers tangible impact for practitioners, policymakers and society. This book represents the culmination of several years of research and innovation on Artificial Intelligence, building upon a portfolio of research and development projects initiated in 2021. While AI continues to transform the policing landscape through enhanced analytical capabilities, automation, and decision support, its successful adoption depends not only on technological advancement but also on robust accountability, effective governance and public trust. These themes for m the foundation of this volume. The chapters provide an in-depth examination of accountability in the context of AI and policing and explore the opportunities and challenges presented by the increasing deployment of AI technologies across law enforcement. Rather than viewing accountability solely as a legal or ethical requirement or a conceptual instrument, this book argues that it should be recognised as a strategic capability that enables responsible innovation, strengthens organisational confidence, and reinforces public legitimacy.
