This is a book about the oldest practical question human beings have asked — what makes a life go well? — and about the two great conversations that have tried to answer it. The first is philosophy, which has been arguing about the good life for twenty-five centuries. The second is science, which began measuring happiness barely a century ago and has spent the last forty years learning, sometimes painfully, how to do it well. Most books choose one conversation. This one listens to both, because each keeps correcting the other. The chapters can be read in order, as a single argument, or dipped into as a reference. Either way, a few recurring features hold the book together. The Three Horizons. Early on, in the Prologue, you will meet a simple map of well-being: the near horizon of the moment (how life feels), the middle horizon of the story (how life goes, as you judge it), and the far horizon of the world (what your life means beyond itself). Every chapter ends by asking how its subject plays out across these three horizons, and every chapter opening carries a small threeringed emblem showing which horizons it touches most. By the final part, the map becomes a theory — and, I hope, a tool. The Evidence. Tinted cards set out the key studies: who ran them, what they did, what they found and — always — the caveat. Science of well-being has had its share of overstatement, and a reader deserves to know which findings are bedrock and which are sand.
