Spread-spectrum communication systems are digital wireless systems that forgo spectral efficiency to make secure communications difficult to detect and process, accommodate fading and multipath channels, and provide a multipleaccess capability. I have written this fifth edition of “Principles of Spread-Spectrum Communication Systems” because spread-spectrum systems are an important option in designing a digital communication system. Although spreadspectrum systems have been eclipsed in the world of commercial cellular communications by orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems, spreadspectrum systems remain a force in other worlds, such as the Global Positioning System, Bluetooth, and military communications.
