This book emerged from a call for papers by the Australian Association for Bush Adventure Therapy (AABAT) on the topic “outdoor health and nature-based solutions” for a special issue of the Journal of Outdoor & Environmental Education in 2023. The overwhelming number and quality of submissions inspired the volunteer editorial team to collate and share the rich contributions. In 2024, AABAT became Outdoor Health Australia (OHA), the national body for evidenceinformed nature-based health, wellbeing, and therapy practices in Australia, and those initial submissions have grown into this diverse collection of 31 chapters. The final curated collection represents a wide range of professional perspectives, geographic locations, settings, target groups, and academic disciplines. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all 70 authors for their generous contributions, and to the 20 external reviewers whose insights helped deepen and broaden the quality of this book. A central aim of the book is to re-centre Indigenous ways of knowing and being, and lived experience, as valid forms of practice-based evidence. In the face of the current ecological and sociocultural crises, the work of re-membering of Indigenous knowledge systems is both timely and essential. We thank all Aboriginal authors and reviewers, and in particular, Jacob Prehn who brought an Indigenous lens to the editorial process. A significant highlight of this book is the inclusion of high quality work by firsttime authors, reviewers and editors alongside seasoned contributors, through which we have collectively strengthened the capacity of the outdoor health sector to articulate stories of practice, findings from research evidence, and powerful vignettes. The front cover design was created by Aboriginal artist Janice Ross, a strong and proud Tasmanian Aboriginal Saltwater Sister, for the 22nd annual national forum of the Australian Outdoor Health community held in Lutruwita/Tasmania in April 2024. Entitled mukaminya—native track, Janice’s abalone design represents sea country, inviting us to remember the tracks that link us, and the importance of connecting with Indigenous ways of knowing, being and relating. As the cover design of this book, it reminds us that we are all connected. We are grateful for financial contributions from Outdoor Health Australia, the University of Tasmania, the Western Sydney University, and an anonymous private sponsor for support with the editorial process. We’d like to specifically thank Pam Firth who diligently copyedited and strengthened the quality of the book. A generous grant from the Victorian Government Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions enabled open access publication, expanding the reach and impact of this work. To all who volunteered their time, expertise, and passion, we offer our sincere thanks. And to the families and loved ones (of all kinds) who supported the authors, reviewers, and editors throughout the journey of this book, we are deeply grateful for your patience, encouragement, and love.
