Teaching students history through the use of Hollywood films is far from a new pedagogical method. Students throughout the past century have watched movies first on filmstrips, then VHS tapes, then DVDs, and now streaming services. What has changed over time, however, is the way that teachers are using Hollywood films. While teachers of all content areas find ways to integrate these films into their classrooms, it has historically been the social studies classroom where this type of resource has become most well-known for its overuse (Roquemore, 1999). After all, social studies teachers ‘just press play,’ right?
