Following earlier research projects on high-performance and ultra-high-performance concrete (i.e. Priority Programme SPP 1182), the need for broad-based coordinated research on the behaviour of such concretes under fatigue loading was identified and discussed in the early 2010s. Based on this, the initiators Ludger Lohaus (Leibniz University Hannover), Peter Wriggers (Leibniz University Hannover) and Steffen Anders (University of Wuppertal) applied for funding for a Priority Programme, which was finally granted in 2016 as SPP 2020 “Cyclic Deterioration of High- Performance Concrete in an Experimental-Virtual-Lab” by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The SPP 2020 was coordinated at the Institute of Building Materials Science, Leibniz University Hannover. Twelve joint research projects with different scientific focuses and the Central Project were brought together in a joint research network involving 14 German universities and granted for a first funding period of three years in 2017. Nine research projects and the Central Project continued or, in one case, began their research work in the second funding period, which started in 2020. This second period extended unexpectedly till 2024 due to the hindered research possibilities during the corona pandemic. However, more than 90 researchers—doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and professors—worked enthusiastically together in those seven years. The overall scope of the SPP 2020 was to capture, understand, describe, model and predict the material degradation of high-performance concretes. The damage processes in microstructure occur on a very small scale and, thus, can hardly be observed directly in experiments. The desired results were, therefore, developed in a close cooperation between materials and modelling science which represents the interconnection of experiment and computation in the Experimental-Virtual-Lab. The detection, characterisation and model-based description of the damage and crack development in the heterogeneous concrete microstructure at different scales over up to some millions of load cycles were the specific research challenges within this DFG Priority Programme. This book contains the main results of the coordinated joint research projects in the SPP 2020 regarding the current state of knowledge on the subject of fatigue damage of high-performance concretes and its numerical modelling in a compact and, at the same time, in-depth form. All authors have put a huge amount of effort into writing the chapters of this book. The research work in this Priority Programme was characterised in an exceptional way by mutual trust, open scientific exchange and goal-oriented cooperation, also across project boundaries. In addition, networks for their future careers or even friendships developed between the participants. In any case, bonds were forged between building materials and modelling scientists that will continue to exist beyond the SPP 2020 and certainly lead to many new and exciting research results in the future. Many thanks to everyone involved for their valuable cooperation and great engagement. Furthermore, and on behalf of all scientists involved in the SPP 2020, we thank the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) for the financial support of this Priority Programme SPP 2020.
