When asked to select our most complex sensation, most will choose vision, hearing, or even smell. That would be incorrect because, as we have learned recently, pain is by far the most complex of all the sensations. It is also the most clinically relevant and, surprisingly, the most important for survival. The purpose of this book is to describe the many recent advances in our understanding of pain and to explain how they are leading to important new approaches to pain management.
