Our volume on the responsibility of science stems from a 2019 meeting of GeWiF, the Berlin Society for the Study of Science (Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftsforschung). The opening question of the meeting also defines the topical outline of this book: Science has become indispensable. It has long since left behind the stage of pure observation and the acquisition of knowledge. Instead, in the twentieth century, science became a power through its alliance with technology. The development of nuclear energy, genetic engineering, or digitalization is no longer conceivable without the involvement of science. This power gives rise to responsibility. How far [then] does the responsibility of science actually extend? How far does it go beyond the obligation to conduct expert research?
