In my work with master data, I have found that you often encounter new types of master data problems that require a helping hand to solve. At the same time, you are met with many technical terms and complexity that can make it challenging to find your way around at first. I have shelves full of professional books that clearly explain many master data terms. Still, in my 20 years of work with master data, I have lacked the practical master data guide that you can look up to get ideas for solving common master data challenges. Since I have encountered other master data practitioners with the same challenges, I have chosen to take time out of my calendar and write the practical master data guide that I have lacked during my working life. I have based my starting point on my experiences as an internal master data manager and later as an independent consultant. Therefore, the challenges I have encountered several times in my work are given the most significant weight, as they have a more general nature that can arise quickly. My book is designed for master data practitioners who engage with master data in various ways on a daily basis. This includes tasks such as managing data, establishing frameworks, and providing support within master data teams, as well as within the business or IT departments. Some readers may not have a formal education in the data field, while others may have one. I have made a concerted effort to ensure that the concepts surrounding master data are accessible to professionals with different levels of expertise in the data domain. My book is designed for those who wish to apply the content directly to their daily work. So, it is not a theoretical book but a practical guide that not only explains technical concepts but also provides you with concrete instructions on how to approach things, enabling you to support your business with proper master data and sound master data quality. In fact, data quality is a recurring theme in my book, and various methods for improving it are provided. I have chosen to take as a starting point what has worked for me and my clients. Therefore, the book will present self-developed, hands-on concepts, tools, and methods in the data area, accompanied by detailed explanations, illustrations, and examples, intended to make complex topics and issues more accessible. The book always focuses on the data angle, so when I discuss access management and system implementation, it is solely about securing the best foundation for your data, rather than from an IT angle with system configurations, because you can find that elsewhere. I have encountered the phrase that we need to have our master data governance in place, and then everything will fall into place. But when I asked what this governance was, I was met with somewhat vague answers. However, I have found that when working with master data, there is often a coincidence in the measures I use to solve the challenges I face. I constantly worked with the areas of master data, systems, and organizations, and I experienced that they were like three gears that you could turn. They are so interconnected that when you turn one, it affects the others as well. Over the years, I have been involved in various initiatives across three key areas, leading to the development of the best practices master data governance framework that has been refined through years of experience. This framework has proven valuable to both me and the practitioners I’ve collaborated with, and customer feedback has encouraged me to put in the effort to publish it now. I have explained the different parts of the master data governance framework in detail, supplementing the explanation with examples, overviews, illustrations, and stepby- step processes to provide a comprehensive understanding of each area and offer guidance on how to work with them, enabling you to get started. Since the master data governance area can be a significant undertaking, I recommend that you delve into the challenges you face now and here. Therefore, I have written the chapters and sections so that they can be read separately as a kind of reference work, and I have made a lot of effort to reference other parts of the book if it may be beneficial to read further there. However, remember that the three gears are interconnected, so you may need to adjust the other gears as well. It is my philosophy to start small and work step by step so that your company has the resources to handle things and can absorb new initiatives and working methods. That is why I have also chosen to provide you with some tools to scope, prioritize, and plan your initiatives in relation to your business needs. Although the book primarily focuses on master data, I will also briefly touch on the other data categories, as some readers may struggle to distinguish between the characteristics and uses of the different data categories.
