this book consists of a small number of master classes I have taught in the form of essays on the sort of problems high- speed electronic digital computers can “solve” that would other wise be quite difficult (or even impossible) to handle analytically. Each problem uses the ability of modern computers to rapidly perform massive amounts of computation. I think it pretty obvious ( because this book is limited, by practical considerations, to not exceeding a weight that can be carried by a reasonably fit person) that I cannot represent every conceivable type of problem here. However, I have attempted to include problems that typically confront applied mathematicians, engineers, and scientists. This focus is in contrast to a previous book (Duelling Idiots, Prince ton 2002), in which I treated problems that are more whimsical than “serious,” while the problems in this book are serious. I think of this text as being a “Goldilocks and porridge” book: that is, not too big and not too small, but just the right size to be satisfying without leaving you with an overstuffed feeling! Before starting my academic career, I worked for over ten years in industry and military think tanks, and much of what you will see here actually came across my desk at one time or another. Often with a note from my then boss saying, in effect, “Think about this and see what you can do. I’d like to hear back from you by the end of the week.” Sometimes that was the very next day!
